Q: When will the shop be open?
A: It is! We opened June 19th. We are still finishing the final steps of the “build out”. But the Shop is open to Members.
Q: What equipment will be available?
A: Our “basic” equipment list is included in the Member Shop Plan. The Shop Equipment page under the Member Shop menu has more detailed information about the major pieces of equipment in the shop. It’s our intention to offer virtually anything any Member could want. A full complement of basic woodworking tools will be available, but we also want to offer larger, more specialized tools that even Members with their own home shops might need from time to time. Examples include lathes, a CNC, large thickness sander, a laser cutter/engraver, mortising machine, spindle sander, edge sander, down draft sanding table, long bed jointer, scroll saws and much, much more.
Q: Where is the Shop located?
A: Our Shop is centrally located just north of Miramar Road and just east of I – 805. The address is 5360 Eastgate Mall, Suite E.
Q: How big is it?
A: The total square footage is approximately 3,000 sq ft. It includes a large tool room, a Classroom/Hand Tool Room, Reception Area, Lounge, Library and Office. It truly is a first class facility!
Q: What are the Shop hours?
A: Our goal is to have it open whenever Members need it. You can find the current operating hours on the Member Shop Home Page of the sdfwa.org website. We will continue to adjust the hours based on Shift Manager availability and Member demand. If you would like to volunteer as a Shift Manager, contact Pete Sterling at email@example.com.
Q: How much will it cost me to use the Shop?
A: Our philosophy is to offer this Membership at the lowest price possible. Currently, there are two Membership plans to choose from. The Silver Membership is $150/year and allows you 15 slots of Shop time of up to three hours in each slot. The Gold Membership is $300 and provides 50 slots. That’s just $2 per hour for access to any tool in the Shop (except the CNC cutter and the laser) as well as all of the other benefits. Additional slots are available for sale in blocks of 10 slots for $40. There is also a one-time Initiation Fee of $99 that covers the cost of your initial Safety Training. Importantly, all shop members must maintain a current membership in the San Diego Fine Woodworkers Association (SDFWA), which only costs $30 per year. In addition to allowing admission to the Member Shop, membership in the SDFWA brings with it a variety of benefits which are outlined in the SDFWA President's Message.
Q: Are you going to offer Classes?
A: Yes! It’s our intention to offer a wide variety of both skills and project based Classes. Many of the Classes will be taught by our SDFWA members. Most will be offered to Shop Members at very affordable rates. Go to our Training calendar and you can see what’s currently scheduled. Q: What other benefits come with my Membership?
A: Many! We have what we believe is the largest Library of woodworking publications on the West Coast…free to Members. We already have a number of Special Interest Groups started or planned, including Carving, Toy Building and Women in Woodworking. These will afford free time in the Shop to meet other woodworkers who share a common interest, share ideas and increase your knowledge base. And…there’s more to come!
