Q: How long has the shop been open? 


A: We opened June 19, 2017.  We have added over 100 members since then.

Q: What equipment is available?

A:  The Shop Equipment page under the Member Shop menu has more detailed information about the major pieces of equipment in the shop.  We aim to offer virtually anything a member could want.  A full complement of basic woodworking tools is available, but we also offer specialized tools that even members with their own shops need from time to time.  Examples include lathes, two CNCs, large thickness sander, two 100 watt, large bed laser cutter/engravers, Festool Domino Machine, 3D Printer, 22" Thickness Planer, a newly purchased 12 inch jointer, mortising machine, spindle sander, edge sander, down draft sanding table, scroll saws and more. 


Q: Can I take a tour of the Shop?
A:  Yes!  You're welcome to stop by the Shop anytime we're open.  There is always a Shift Supervisor on duty that will show you around and answer any questions you may have.

Q: Where is the Shop located?

A:  Our Shop is centrally located just north of Miramar Road and just east of I – 805. 




Q: How big is it?

A: The total square footage is approximately 3,000 sq ft.  It includes a large tool room, a Classroom/Hand Tool Room, Reception Area, Lounge, Library and Office.  It truly is a first class facility! 

Q: What are the Member Shop hours?

A: Our goal is to have it open whenever Members need it.  You can find the current operating hours on the Member Shop Home Page.   We will continue to adjust the hours based on Member needs.

Q: How much will it cost me to use the Shop?

A: Our philosophy is to offer this Membership at the lowest price possible.  Currently, there are two Membership plans to choose from.  The Silver Membership is $250/year and allows you 15 slots of Shop time of up to three hours in each slot.  The Gold Membership is $395 and provides 50 slots.  That’s less than $3 per hour for access to any tool in the Shop as well as all of the other benefits.  Additional slots are available for sale in blocks of 5 slots for $40.  Shop membership includes membership in the San Diego Fine Woodworkers Association (SDFWA).  Membership in the SDFWA brings with it a variety of benefits which are outlined in the SDFWA All About Us page.

Q: Does the Member Shop offer Classes? 

A: Yes!  We offer a wide variety of both skills and project based classes.  Many of the classes are taught by our SDFWA members.  You will find that the cost is very reasonable.  Go to our Training calendar and you can see what’s currently scheduled.  If you have an interest in teaching a class, contact Susan Lively-Klug at education@sdfwa.org.

Q: What other benefits come with my Membership? 

A: Many!  We have what we believe is the largest library of woodworking publications on the West Coast…free to Members.  We have a number of Special Interest Groups, including Digital Tools, Carving, Toy Building and Women Who Woodworking.  A Luthier Special Interest Group is currently forming as well.  These will afford free time in the Shop to meet other woodworkers who share a common interest, share ideas and increase your woodworking knowledge.
